Mpengesi Hires Truter for Survival
In a desperate bid to avoid relegation, Chippa United chairman Siviwe “Chippa” Mpengesi has appointed Brandon Truter as the club’s seventh head coach of the season. The appointment comes just days before a high-stakes encounter against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday, 23 May 2026. Truter replaces Morgan Mammila, who was relieved of his duties following a dismal run that saw the “Chilli Boys” plummet to 15th in the Betway Premiership standings.
Mpengesi, infamous for his frequent coaching changes, defended the decision as a necessary gamble. “We are in a position where we cannot afford to wait. Brandon knows the league, and he knows how to organise a defense,” Mpengesi stated during the unveiling on 19 May 2026. The chairman added that the mandate is simple: “Secure our top-flight status at all costs.”
Truter, who previously managed Sekhukhune United and AmaZulu, acknowledged the volatility of the job but remained optimistic. “I am under no illusions about the pressure here,” Truter told reporters. “But the squad has quality, and with the right tactical discipline, we can get a result against Chiefs.”
If Chippa fails to win, they risk slipping into the automatic relegation spot currently occupied by Magesi FC, making this weekend’s clash a definitive moment for the Port Elizabeth-based side.
